The Ombudsperson for Children

A local, independent children's ombudsman

The Ombudsman for Children is a non-profit organisation. We work locally, regionally and nationally, always close to children. Our office is located in Uppsala.

We have a non-profit public partnership with Uppsala Municipality and Region Uppsala.

We are completely independent from local, regional and national authorities. This gives us great opportunities to act in favour of the rights of children and young people.

This is what we want

Every child should be able to live and develop in the best possible way based on their own circumstances. The Ombudsman for Children wants to change society so that children's rights really work.

This is how we do it

We work strategically, long-term and practically, close to children and together with all those who can contribute to realising the best interests of the child.

Some success stories

These are just a few examples that show the breadth of our activities.

  • 62,300 children and young people in Uppsala County travelled free of charge with UL in summer 2024. The issue was driven by our summer workers In 2023, the young people who pushed the issue saw that democratic advocacy works and that politicians listened to them.
  • The training programme Equal rights is used across the country to increase safety in schools. The material has been downloaded 12 000 times from the website (2024).
  • The Council of Europe Guidelines on the Participation of Children in Health Care include The Child Friendly Care Network as a good example. The motivation is that the network includes children and young people in the regular quality work in healthcare. We are a co-creator and driving force in the network, which consists of many children's hospitals and clinics in Sweden.
  • Child rights for all is a material for children with special needs to understand and use their rights. It is used in schools, preschools and adapted schools throughout Sweden.

The Ombudsperson for Children stands for dialogue and cooperation, for advocacy and influence. We broaden perspectives to reach concrete solutions in the best interests of the child.

We work locally, regionally and nationally at individual, group and community level, focusing on promoting what is good. Our special status as an independent children's organisation is a prerequisite for our work.

We often turn to adults in our work, as they have the greatest potential to make a difference.

We always have the best interests of the child at heart.

The Children's Commissioner works with the three focus areas From Knowledge to Action, Children and Young People's Voices and Advocacy.

From knowledge to action

Making children's rights work requires knowledge, insight and action. The Ombudsman for Children is a knowledge centre for children's rights.
