A local, independent children's ombudsman
The Ombudsman for Children is a non-profit organisation. We work locally, regionally and nationally, always close to children. Our office is located in Uppsala.
We have a non-profit public partnership with Uppsala Municipality and Region Uppsala.
We are completely independent from local, regional and national authorities. This gives us great opportunities to act in favour of the rights of children and young people.

Our vow of silence
We are not sworn to secrecy. This is our vow of silence.
- We will not tell anyone that you have contacted us.
- But if a child is in danger, we will tell social services or the police. If we intend to do so, we will tell you.
- We do not keep any medical records. You can remain anonymous when you contact us.
What we do in counselling cases
Our perspective is the child and the rights of the child. We are keen to talk directly to the children concerned if it is appropriate/possible.
We can help within Uppsala municipality. We can also advise on questions about care or other activities within Region Uppsala. It is the responsibility of the municipality and the region to ensure that children receive the right support, care and treatment.
For example, we cannot help in cases involving schools or social services outside Uppsala municipality.
Our advice is that we
- tell you or find out what support or care and treatment is available,
- tell you or find out who or what people you need to talk to if you want to try to change something,
- clarifies and explains things that may be difficult to understand,
- provides information on rights, laws and guidelines,
- can mediate in certain deadlocks.
What we do not do in counselling cases
We can only help within Uppsala municipality and when it concerns healthcare or other issues within Region Uppsala. For example, we cannot help in matters concerning schools or social services outside Uppsala municipality.
We cannot
- require authorities to take specific actions or disclose classified documents to us,
- provide financial assistance,
- take a stand in conflicts between custodians,
- provide legal assistance from lawyers,
- be the legal representative of the child or guardian.
